THE BASICS OF HAIR GROWTH

On average, a healthy person has between 100-150 thousand hairs, which grow about 0.3-0.4 mm per day, and 13 mm per month. However, growth is not uniform, as hairs grow at different rates different stages of growth.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF HAIR

ACTIVE SECTION

Also called the anagen or growth phase, 85-90% of the hairs on your scalp are in this phase. This active phase can last on average 2-6 years, depending on the individual and gender.

TRANSITIONAL PHASE

Also known as the catagen phase. Hair growth slows down, the hair follicle is no longer supplied with nutrients and the hair shaft is pushed out of the hair follicle. The hair shaft separates from the root but does not fall out until another hair shaft grows in its place. This stage lasts on average 2-4 weeks and only 1% of our hair is in this phase.

TELAGEN PHASE

This is the so-called resting phase. At this stage, the hair is already dead but does not fall out until it is replaced by a new, stronger hair. Around 14% of our total hair is in this phase and the process takes on average 2-3 months.

FALLOUT AND REGROWTH

This is when new hair appears on the scalp and the old hair falls out.

The duration of these phases can vary depending on the organism, genetic make-up, hair follicle function and external influences. The hair is 5-10 every 5-10 years, the hair follicle detaches from the hair follicle and dies and is replaced by a new hair follicle from the same follicle. This process is known as natural hair shedding and involves the shedding of 40 to 100 hairs per day. A hair follicle can go through this renewal phase 10-25 times, depending on its genetic make-up, and then die. This is why everyone loses part of their hair as they age.
